Turkey is a one of the 50 founding members of the United Nations. Turkey signed the UN Charter on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco and through the years, became a member of almost all specialized agencies and other bodies within the UN system.
Turkey maintains Permanent Delegations at the UN Headquarters in New York, at the UN Offices in Geneva and Vienna, and at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris. Turkish Ambassadors in Rome and Kenya serve as Permanent Representatives to the FAO in Rome and UN HABITAT in Nairobi.
Turkey makes increasing amounts of voluntary contributions to the UN funds, programmes and agencies, as well as other relevant organizations. Some among those are the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), UNIDO Industrial Development Fund, UN Emergency Response Fund (CERF), UN Population Fund (UNFPA), UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN Peace Building Fund.
